<div class="MsoNormal">
Privilege—as a concept, a racial or economic barrier, or an
unfair advantage for some—has captured the current zeitgeist's most progressive
thinkers, sparking debate on the ethics of what is fair and unfair advantage. I
touched upon the idea of privilege in <b><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/series/83583-guardians-of-aandor" target="_blank"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">TheGuardians of Aandor</i></a> </b>series since the feudal nature of the alternate
universe lends itself easily to the discussion, though I applied a light touch
so as not to be preachy. Escapist fiction (unlike literature like <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Handmaid's Tale</i>) is easier to digest when
complex concepts are subtly woven into the story and do not hamper the
narrative flow. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal">
Power is hereditary in our heroes' alternate reality. Hence,
privilege in its original and purest sense versus the more murky social-science
construct of white privilege, which is a divisive topic and ramps discourse up to
the level of argument. The constructs of white privilege do exist in the story
metaphorically, though, with nonhuman races—dwarvs, centaurs, gnolls, etc.—symbolically
in the role of disenfranchised/marginalized people in our world. As Man
encroaches on their lands, resentment is high among the disenfranchised, and we
feel this in the interactions between nonhuman and human characters. Men have
drawn their maps and swallowed whole other tribes within their lines. They were
able to do this because they possess sorcery. In this regard, the situation is
similar to the European colonial period, with magic taking the place of advance
technologies and economics. (And didn't Arthur C. Clarke say that, "Any
sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.")</div>

Book launches are important to writers. Much like the way
Nielsen Ratings uses sweeps periods throughout the year (Feb., May, July, Nov.)
to determine numbers used in setting TV advertising costs, publishers use the
first week of a book's sales to gauge a writer's popularity. These are the
writer's die-hard fans, or fans in the subject matter of which the author is
deemed to excel in writing about. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
First week sales numbers determine many factors: how much
more publicity money the publisher will free up to promote the book; whether
they will continue to employ a writer or set him loose; and, if they do keep
the writer, how much his or her next advance will be. Most authors will
only make a best seller's hit in the opening week. The majority of books do not
have long-term sustainability. Only a fraction of all the books ever published remain
in print years after they come out. </div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Daniel
awoke in a dark wood. The queasiness, aching joints, and vertigo were
bad...worse than the morning after he and Adrian snuck off with Mr. Lutz's pint
of Jägermeister--which he and Adrian surmised must be the German word for
Nyquil. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Daniel
tried to stand up, but his head weighed fifty pounds and pressed him back on
his ass--the world was two sets of swaying phantom images attempting to
converge into a single picture. He closed his eyes and put his head between his
knees for a moment. Then, slowly, he lifted his head and looked around. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The
brush was dense and riddled with thorns and thistles that threatened to scratch
out an eye and scar you like a rabid coon. A smoky haze softening the edges of
the world reminded Daniel of old Hollywood movies that used nylons over the
lenses to soften actresses past their prime. The forest smelled of bacon. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The
last thing he remembered in the meadow was trying to help Seth and then a
searing light. Then just infinite blackness--he and his friends were specks of
dust flying through an immeasurable vacuum. Daniel couldn't gauge their
velocity, but millions of lines of light, what he could only imagine were
entire universes, riffled past like the edges of discs in a cosmic jukebox--in
the deep reptilian recesses of his mind, he knew that if they'd collided with
so much as a stray proton, they would be obliterated. And then they fell toward
one disk...and then they were pulled toward the darkest pool in that light,
like a still lake as seen from the air. It drew them like a beacon in the
storm. Lelani did something--though how she could move or think in that state
was beyond comprehension--she changed their course. The wizard found a stream
away from the dark spot and diverted them all--but it was rough...literally
fighting momentum and thrust from midair. </span></div>

too soon. Just as the show was finding its rhythm, the executives at Fox balked
at the show's $3 million per episode budget and tepid Friday night ratings. Fox
just didn't see its potential. Good space opera has always been costly to
produce, and ratings-versus-cost is a repetitive cancelling theme when it comes
to our speculative fiction entertainment--at least fans of the original <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060028/">StarTrek</a> got 75 episodes out of that run. At long last, though, we have found
Firefly's heir apparent; it is called <a href="http://www.syfy.com/darkmatter">Dark Matter</a>, and it's already made it
past its first season. </div>

Lower production costs have made ambitious programming less
risky. <a href="http://www.syfy.com/">SyFy</a> took the plunge recently and produced a plethora of new space

Dark Matter captures Firefly's essence. The writing and show mythology only got
better in season two, something Firefly never got its chance to prove.</div>

So you're going to be a writer? Awesome. You are never going
to please everyone, so own it; the thin-skinned have no business being authors (or
auteurs). Words have put the most popular and successful authors on the painful
side of a controversy (Sometimes it's intentional.) That said...keep an open
mind to the opinions of critics and friends. If you are going to create
fictional scenarios that skirt the edge of mass acceptance, know why you are
writing those actions. When <a href="http://www.georgerrmartin.com/" target="_blank">George R.R. Martin</a> decided to have brother and
sister lovers in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Game_of_Thrones" target="_blank"><i>Game of Thrones</i></a>, he was setting up the premise of the entire

uninterrupted blocks of time with which to craft your tales--time to let your
story ferment and then time for revisions. You need a thousand hours to write two

personal pleasure and socializing, and then maybe...maybe, you will have a

isolation were the most compatible themes with the short story's formal
qualities. In that spirit, "<a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8599157-you-know-when-the-men-are-gone" target="_blank">You Know When The Men Are Gone</a>" by <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/4123884.Siobhan_Fallon" target="_blank">Siobhan Fallon</a> is the
quintessential short story collection, and Siobhan Fallon one of the best new
writers to arrive in many years. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
These series of stories are at heart about isolation even in
the midst of a community that makes great efforts to reach out to those
affected by deployment over seas. You never know the private battles your
neighbor is going through, and they come in many shapes and sizes: PTSD,
physical trauma, lost limbs, infidelity, graft...as if life isn't hard enough,
being married and in the military dials up the pitfalls and trials to eleven.
Fallon's voice rings true in these tales, and why shouldn't they? She was a
military spouse stationed in Fort Hood while her husband completed two
deployments in Iraq. A marriage that survives base housing and deployments has
the legs to hold together a hundred years. </div>

I loved <i>The Force Awakens</i> and am a fan of the original trilogy, but visually, from a design and production standpoint, the

interesting, even the ones that smacked of racial stereotypes. All our
criticisms of those films had to do with story and casting, but the costumes,
headdresses, ship and set designs, and characters were extremely novel, and Lucas directed them expertly. <span class="textexposedshow">Lucas showed us a Jedi order in its infinite diversity--knights from all over the galaxy in all shapes and colors. </span>The pod races

When I watch a zombie show, I expect to cringe at the gruesomeness of the undead eating people I've grown to love...people I am rooting for to live and be happy. When I am instead cringing at flaccid dialogue and actions that have no bearing on reality, I know there's a problem.<br>

at minimum, this is a 45-day, full-time commitment. To non-creative types, this

In 1994, I was a freelance artist working mostly for Marvel Comics. Craig Anderson hired me to draw six pages in the <a href="http://marvel.wikia.com/Guardians_of_the_Galaxy_Annual_Vol_1_4">Guardians of The Galaxy Annual</a> that year. To be honest, until the movie came out this summer, I had completely forgotten I had drawn for Guardians of The Galaxy. When the trailer started appearing in theaters earlier this spring, I kept thinking, "Gee, that title sounds awfully familiar." <br>
<br>
Fortunately, I kept all my artwork from that era. I still have three of the six original pages (we split them with the inkers; in this case my friend Rodney Ramos). More importantly, I found xeroxes of my breakdowns. <br>
<br>
I'll always be grateful to Craig Anderson and Lynaire Brust for thinking of me whenever there was work to be assigned as well as many other great editors (like Terry Kavanaugh, Don Daley, Renee Witterstaeter, and Mike Lackey) who I still consider friends to this day. The pages are presented in chronological order below with the breakdowns to the right of the published versions. <br>

Edward Lazellari</h2>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">In 1999, I was a senior majoring in English literature at Rutgers University, with a concentration in creative writing. The Date was my second submission to Playboy; I had tried the previous year with a story about a NASA shuttle mission and astronauts getting it on in zero gravity. (It was not as good.) Somehow, under the onslaught of plodding through melancholy emo stories of student life generated by my classmates, I managed to find my way to this dark comedy. The inspiration was a Dateline NBC story about conjoined 10-year-old twins living in the Midwest, and thriving despite their condition. I was a big fan of the girls, cheering them on for making lemonade out of life's lemons. I remember being grateful that my problems did not come that big and that I should be more of a doer and less of a complainer. I also remember thinking, <i>"things would get a lot harder once those girls hit puberty, though."</i> Duh! And of course, it clicked. I hit the computer like a force of nature for the next three days--and here we are.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">If your 84-year old mother is anything like mine, then she's not texting a whole lot. She's probably not surfing the Web, playing video games, tweeting, or updating her Facebook page either. So why does she need a smart phone or an expensive plan that locks her in until she's 87? Fact is, she doesn't. However, we need our senior loved ones to be able to reach us, especially in times of emergency. Some form of mobile communication is a must, and it's often the children that pay for it.</span><br>
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"></span><br>

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">In researching this subject, I was not surprised to find that modern phones confuse the elderly. </span><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">After all, this is the generation that could not figure out how to program their VCRs when they were still in their 40s. </span>What an Octogenarian needs in a mobile device is simplicity, large numbers, and good volume. They need a Contacts menu with few steps; two clicks away from the loved one they want to reach. And, they don't need a plan at all because they still use their house phones for everything (i.e. they need a prepaid plan). </span><br>

Although it features a character from my novels, which are adult urban fantasy, this one beckoned to be a young adult (YA) story. The illustration is an oldie from 1995, when I still made a living as an artist for Marvel. I only had an inkling of my fantasy series at the time and was still fleshing out the back story. (Lelani in <i>The Ogre Hunt </i>is much younger than she appears in this illustration and has a full head of hair instead of a Mohawk.) I had fun writing this short and present it here for old fans and new. <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-o9eGGVympRZDJsTTAxT0RyOVE/edit?usp=sharing">A PDF version is also available by clicking on this Link. </a></span></span></b></span></div>

It was implausibly swift for such a large, brutish creature—twenty-five feet

matching big brown eyes. Her short-sleeved forest-green smock denoted the Fhlee

Picard glared at the glass plaque on his ready room desk as though it carried a
deadly disease. The gold inscription read: <i>For
service, above and beyond the call of duty in upholding the Prime Directive.</i>
The irony was not lost on him; Jean-Luc had earned it for an act of mutiny,
defending the Ba'ku race from the schemes of an overzealous Starfleet Admiral
named Dougherty. He had hoped his insurrection would trigger a dialogue over
slack Federation ethics, but the discourse never materialized, and the matter
had been neatly swept under the rug. Dougherty had friends in high places, it
would seem, and perhaps a few silent collaborators as well. Why else would the
fleet's flagship be on a "cooling off" mission cataloguing gas
densities in the Mutara Nebula. Picard wanted to hurl the glass block and its
polished marble base right into space. </span></div>

its debut on August 20th, and the reviews so far have been overwhelmingly
positive. I want to point out one important change I've made regarding the ending
of this book compared with its predecessor; although Awakenings also received
much praise, many reviewers (and readers) were put out by the cliffhanger
ending, and didn't realize they were starting a series. I'd actually read reviews
where readers admitted I'd lost a star on their rating for this very reason.
With book 2, I decided to go with a more definitive ending. What does this mean exactly? It's the
difference between the ending of a Harry Potter book, where that book's story is relatively wrapped
up, and that in A Game of Thrones book, </span><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">when the story stops just as</span><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"> a protagonist dies, his
family is scattered to the winds, and the bad guys are victorious. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"></span><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">In truth, the ending I had always envisioned for The Lost
Prince already lent itself to this more definitive conclusion. (Unlike the
writers of the TV show, <a href="http://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebook/the-lost-prince-14">Lost</a>, I actually do have an idea of where my story is
going.) And boy, what an ending it is! The fact is, books one and two roll
together like an epic self-contained 900-page story. If you didn't want to
continue reading this universe, you could stop at the end of The Lost Prince, completely
satisfied. If I had to create a metaphor for comparison I'd go with this:
Awakenings was a delicious home-cooked three-course meal with a modest, though
tasty dessert. (Think a scoop of gelato.) The Lost Prince is a scrumptious, seven-course
gourmet dinner with a three-tiered dessert tray bearing tiramisu, Black Forest chocolate
cake, flan, crème brûlée, pie, and of course, gelato. (For my non-culinary
readers--think deep-fried Oreos, deep-fried Snickers, and deep-fried Twinkies.)
Yes, folks, it's that good! </span><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"></span><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Dresden">Harry Dresden</a> saved me $45 today. I was reading <a href="http://www.amazon.com/White-Night-Dresden-Files-Book/dp/045146155X">White Night</a>
and was toward the end of the story (around 95% on my Kindle) when I needed to
mail some things at the post office. Thing is, here in Jersey City, we have
copious amounts of street cleaning (i.e. nuisance and added tax on the
citizenry), and just when a street seems safe, bang, they come out of the wood
works to ticket you. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipuozxchmdU753eI9WSR_N5wZ0Z9wLROd0m7nurKcblKaLFrLXQFfRHjfn5ApexhQAF5TraFJhX6oT2Dz0yeHnYCOPWcY2ZGCtvFhfVbQFy1LDKIrUGeOhR3gPaDRV2d0Ui-nmwzQtxD8/s1600/ticket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipuozxchmdU753eI9WSR_N5wZ0Z9wLROd0m7nurKcblKaLFrLXQFfRHjfn5ApexhQAF5TraFJhX6oT2Dz0yeHnYCOPWcY2ZGCtvFhfVbQFy1LDKIrUGeOhR3gPaDRV2d0Ui-nmwzQtxD8/s200/ticket.jpg" width="108" /></a>I found a
parking spot near the post office at 2:00 p.m. that appeared to have already
been cleaned; cleaning was from 1:00 to 3:00 according to the sign. I parked,
but being so close to the end of a really great Jim Butcher story, I couldn't wait to finish reading the big battle scene, so I turned off the engine and just read in my car. Ten minutes
later, I hear the honking of the ticket car letting people know the sweeper is
coming. Had I been in the post office, I would have gotten a $45 ticket. But I
was reading White Night that day. That one decision paid for five Harry Dresden
novels. I love Jim Butcher's writing. It's smooth, effortless and a joy to come
back to between chapters. I hope I am also writing stuff that people just can't can't put
down and will one day save them money. </div>

Even Lelani Stormbringer's hair, a fiery blend of reds streaked with blonde, is subdued by the azure haze of Manhattan. The palette denotes a realistic eeriness to this world akin to the X-Files (which used glowing green to great effect).<br />
<br />

She's right. And though I've written about the real-life challenges of trying to write novels while holding a day job and promoting one's book, the other part of that delay is the work (i.e. minutia) involved with writing a coherent, well-thought out story. Many literary writers (my favorite being Jonathan Franzen) go years between books, but we seem to expect a faster turnaround from genre writers. The delays go beyond plot, narrative, character arcs, and story development, although those too are time consuming. What I'm trying to bring to light are small moments that pull a writer aside from the bigger picture. A lot of you can read a paragraph in less than 30 seconds, but are not aware of how many hours it took the writer to make those four or five sentences ring as true as can be. </div>
